A GALLERY OF AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS!
Fountainside Gallery's artists have been successfully garnering awards on the national stage. Out of numerous artists, Andre Kohn has been chosen as the official artist for the 2009 Santa Fe Wine and Chile Festival which will be held in September. Andre will be speaking and auctioning off the featured original oil; this is a huge honor in Santa Fe and brings in thousands of visitors.

Charlotte artist Paula Holtzclaw has been juried into competitions in several shows, including the Bosque Art Conservatory Classic and the Breckenridge Juried Art Show in Texas. She's also been accepted into the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum's annual competition and another in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Christine Debrosky won the Silver Award at the International Association of Pastel Societies exhibit in Santa Fe and her biography will be included in Marquis "Who's Who in American Art, 2010" for the eighth time. Presently she has work showing in the Pastel Society of the West Coast international exhibit at the Triton Museum, Santa Clara, CA.

Charleston artist Mark Horton recently made the trip to NYC for the opening of one of the country's most prestigious shows, the Salmagundi Non-Member Juried Exhibition to view his award-winning landscape. Congrats to Mark, Paula, Christine and Andre!

THINKING ABOUT HOLIDAY GIFTING?
ImageOf course, in this heat and humidity, most people are thinking vacation and back to school, not Christmas or the holidays! But, if you are considering a portrait of your special pet or person, now's the time to make plans. Artists need a little lead time to make preparations and execute the work; often their schedules fill quickly in the fall with commissions. A number of our painters accept commissions such as Hilda Spain-Owen whose great, animated and contemporary pet portraits make wonderful gifts and great home accents. One of her gallery pieces is shown (right) here: "Play Date", acrylic/canvas, 30x30, $2100. If you're interested in a commission, give us a call!
ANDRE KOHN IS OUR "ARTIST OF THE MONTH"
ImageAndre Kohn recently made a trip back to his native Russia and his experiences there make interesting reading. For that and his exceptional paintings, he is our first "Artist of the Month". We asked him to pen some of his reactions to being back in Russia for you to read. Here is his narrative:

"After 17 years of not being able to return to Russia, I was finally able to visit my birthplace. I visited Moscow where I studied fine arts and spent 8 years prior to coming to the USA at age 20. I also flew to Volgograd, city of my birth (formerly Stalingrad) that is known for its rich history and as the most fought for city of WWII. Every day I was surrounded by my dear friends and relatives that I had not seen for 20 years, so warm a welcoming I had not expected....and true Russian vodka, of course, is without a doubt the best binding tool out there.

I continued my trip on an old, slow, loud, smelly, melting on the inside from the heat, bus....taking 5 hours on a two lane ancient, cracked, falling apart highway to go deep into the Russian countryside. I arrived at a small village with no modern amenities; it was as unchanged and unspoiled a traditional Russian atmosphere as could be found. The villagers were the friendliest people, surviving on self-grown organic food full of flavor. Their almost poetic charm helped me reconnect with nature and childhood memories....this magical place cleared my mind and inspired those creative juices.

Some say "do not return to your childhood" after such a long time away as it is a very emotional and sometimes painful experience. I would say, if we avoid powerful, true, rich, deep emotions in life, then what are we here for? But that's just a Russian speaking."

Thank you Andre! We could feel that! (Photo is of Andre helping an elderly villager in that small rural village)
